At Skin Smart Clinic Limited your skin will be assessed during your skin consultation with one of our skincare specialists. A skin care program will be designed, and product recommendation will be outlined to suit your skin concerns.
Acne is caused by the body’s increased production of the hormone androgen (produced by both men and women), which stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. The increased production of oil causes the pores to become blocked, so that the oil cannot come up to the skin surface. The acne itself is an infection caused by skin bacteria that feed on and break down this oil.
As the bacteria multiply, waste products and sebaceous oil are created, and the sebaceous gland becomes inflamed – causing what is known as a blackhead, a whitehead or a pimple.
How does the acne laser treatment work?
The Alma Superior IPL operator guides the light from the flash-lamp to the treatment area. The unique system carefully filters this light in two ways to ensure that only light with the correct characteristics (wavelengths) can reach your skin.
The light that is allowed through is absorbed by hemoglobin, which is the red pigment in blood. The light from the flash-lamp heats up the hemoglobin in the fine blood vessels that supply the sebaceous glands. This causes a minor injury to the sebaceous glands and slows down the overproduction of oil that leads to acne.
How long does the treatment take?
The glass prism within the Alma Superior IPL applicator that guides the light to the skin is 10mm by 48mm, so a large area can be targeted in one flash of light. It takes approximately 60 flashes to treat the full face. Including consultation and preparation, you should count on 45 minutes in the clinic. A typical course of therapy includes four treatments, three weeks apart.
Can I be treated?
If you have permanent acne you will benefit from a treatment. The best results are achieved on inflammatory acne – best known as those red, aching, raised pimples. It is important your skin is relatively pale at the time of the treatment, as too much light will be absorbed by a dark complexion.
How does acne develop?
- A normal hair and sebaceous gland can become partially blocked
- Bacteria called P. Acnes live on the sebum and produce fatty acids
- The body responds by blocking the gland’s exit to the skin
- Sometimes the mixture of hair protein, oil and fatty acids damages the walls of the follicle and causes inflammation
Alma Superior IPL treatment works by reducing the blood supply to the sebaceous gland, which slows down production of the body oil sebum.
Does it hurt?
Tolerance of pain is very individual from person to person. No anaesthetics are required, and many patients describe the discomfort as a warming sensation similar to the feeling one has after a day on the beach. The lighter the skin colour, the less pain.
Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?
The Alma Superior IPL acne treatment is a combination therapy, in the clinic your specialist will recommend a chemical peel to go with your laser treatment and you will be prescribed suitable ZO Skin Health or ZO Medical products to benefit and treat your skin. We recommend you have no sun exposure for 4 weeks prior to treatment.
Generally, no post-treatment care is immediately necessary, but people with sensitive skin may benefit from applying an ice pack to the face immediately after treatment.
What can I expect?
You may notice some general redness on the face following the treatment. If you have sun-damaged skin, some of the pigmented spots may turn darker and eventually disappear.
Because the bacteria are difficult to eradicate completely, your laser specialist will probably recommend that you continue using your ZO skin care products continuously post treatment. Ideally a course of 5-8 treatments are recommended and maintenance treatments once the course is completed.
Although results vary from person to person, initial results from a recent clinical study show that 58% of acne lesions disappeared with the Alma Superior IPL treatment, compared to 33% improvement with topical cream alone. Please talk to your specialist about what results you can expect.
How can I be sure the treatment is safe and effective?
Clinical trials documenting safety and effectiveness are carried out by leading doctors prior to the release of the treatment. The results of these tests are then published in respected, refereed medical journals. The settings used for your treatment will be based on the settings recommended by the clinicians who carried out the clinical trials.
