Skin Pigmentation

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation marks or sunspots are a build-up of melanocytes, or an over production of melanocytes.  Melanocytes are cells containing melanin which is the dark pigment found in our skin.

Some causes of pigmentation:

  • Hereditary
  • Hormonal
  • Contraceptive Pill
  • Stress
  • Sun-Exposure
  • Photo-Sensitivity
  • Medications
  • Aging Process
  • Medications

How does the treatment work?

At Skin Smart Clinic we use a combination of treatments to treat pigmentation.  The skin is assessed by a skin therapist and the correct treatment or treatment combination is chosen.  There are many options to choose from:

  • IPL or Intense Pulsed Light – see below for details
  • Alexandrite Gentle Lase Laser – see below for details
  • Chemical Peels – see website details
  • Microdermabrasion – see website details
  • Pixel Resurfacing Laser – see website details
  • ZO Retinol Based Products – see website details

IPL or Intense Pulsed Light

We use a Superior IPL system which breaks down the build-up of melanocytes.  The light that is emitted from the Superior IPL is attracted to the melanin in the cells.  These cells heat up and are destroyed.

How is the treatment carried out?

The skin is cleansed.  An ultrasound gel is applied to the area. The hand piece is placed and a pulsed shot of light is released.  This is repeated in the neighbouring area until the entire pigmented area is treated. The gel is removed and the skin is cooled down.

Am I suitable for the treatment?

The ideal candidate has pale skin.  You must not expose the area to the sun 30 days prior to treatment or for the duration of the treatment and for 30 days post treatment.

How does the treatment feel?

Everyone describes the treatment differently.  You will feel a heat sensation on the area but it is felt for an instant.

Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?

The most important factor to remember is to avoid sun exposure one month before treatment, one month after your last treatment and for the duration of your treatments in between.  It is recommended to use a sun protection factor 30 in winter and sun protection factor 50 in summer.  Your laser specialist will go through all the precautions in detail.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Redness and a slight warming sensation are normal after the treatment.  The skin will be cooled after the treatment to ease these symptoms.  You may see a darkening of the pigmented areas a few days after the treatment.  This again is normal. They will disappear leading to a more even skin tone.

How many treatments are necessary?

3-6 treatments are recommended every 4 weeks.  Maintenance treatments can be performed if necessary.

What are the costs likely to be?

Packages start at €375 euros for 4 treatments, or from 100-120 per treatment. Should you have any questions or queries regarding prices, please contact us by phone or email.

Alexandrite Gentelase Laser

The 755 Gentle Lase Alexandrite laser is very effective in treating pigmentation/sunspots.

How is the treatment carried out?

The skin is cleansed.  The delivery system is placed on the skin or sun spot and a shot of laser is released.  This is repeated on the pigmented areas until treated.  The pigment will in time turn dark and fade over the next few days.

Am I suitable for the treatment?

The ideal candidate has pale skin. You must not expose the area to the sun 30 days prior to treatment or for the duration of the treatment and for 30 days post treatment.

How does the treatment feel?

The treatment feels slightly hot and a mild vapour is emitted.  Sometimes the pigment will turn dark immediately or may take a few days to go darker and should fade over the next few days.

I went to see Lisa at Skin Smart Clinic before the summer to see what could be done to get rid of some sun damage and brighten my complexion before my wedding in April. Lisa decided on a few different treatments and I am absolutely delighted with my results. Everybody is complimenting me on my skin and how well I look. I’m so happy with my results so far, I can’t thank Lisa enough.
